One important fact I overlooked when writing the piece- the Mayo Echo, rather tellingly, has not signed up to the (currently voluntary) press complaints commission.

Leaving aside the fact that Mr Geraghty seems to have forgotten the maxim that “every man is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law”, I can see a number of sub-texts in the original article. Perhaps Mr Geraghty did not realise that these sub-texts existed when he wrote the piece. However, he has not addressed any of them in the follow up article.

The sub-texts are:-

(a) homosexuality is a perversion (Mr Geraghty’s attempts at semantics around the meaning of the word ‘perverse’ fail to convince me that the original article did not intend to convey this message);

(b) homosexuals are perverts;

(d) it’s okay to beat up a gay (sure, they won’t risk going to the guards, will they?).

With comments like these, is it any wonder that people commit suicide trying to come to terms with the fact that they are attracted to members of their own sex?
