Texas Rangers censor “Yankees suck” t-shirt

A Texas Rangers fan was nearly ejected from a Rangers baseball game against the New York Yankees in Arlington, Texas for a T-shirt that read “Yankees suck”. A security guard told her to turn it inside out, buy another shirt or they would eject her. Read more here

Wikipedia bans Church of Scientology

In an unprecedented effort to crack down on self-serving edits, the Arbitration Committee of Wikipedia  has banned contributions from all IP addresses owned or operated by the Church of Scientology and its associates. Read more here

Sri Lanka threatens to prosecute press

Cuban journalist in second week of hunger strike

Cuban journalist Victor Rolando Arroyo is in his second week of hunger strike as a protest to lack of medical attention, bad sanitary conditions in his cell, his cruel treatment, and the fact that he has not been allowed to practice religion. Arroyo was sentenced in April 2003 to 26 years in prison for acting “against the independence or the territorial integrity of the state”. Read more here

Yemeni government denies banning newspapers

The Yemeni Minister of information has denied that the government had suspended any newspapers, saying that some willingly disappeared and others for troubles with printers. In recent months several newspapers have been shut down and there have been numerous attempts on journalists lives. Read more here

Anti-Chavez protesters take to streets in name of free press

In Venezuela hundreds of opponents of President Hugo Chavez marched in support of press freedom in Venezuela on Wednesday, two years after his government refused to renew the concession of an opposition-aligned television station. Read more here
