Thank you for putting your life on the line in support of free speech and fair reporting.

As an American guest to Tehran in the years of the Shah and Savak, I appreciate the gracious hospitality of the Iranian people yet also understand the chilling effect that totalitarian regimes impose on people.

I am fond of Persian culture and it pains me to see your rich heritage plundered by brutal, power-hungry theocrats. I recall the inspired majesty of Isphahan, Persipolis, and the mystic poetry of Rumi:

“Make yourself free from self at one stroke!

Like a sword be without trace of soft iron;

Like a steel mirror, scour off all rust with

contrition.”

Free minds, free people, and Free Iran!
