As an American guest to Tehran in the years of the Shah and Savak, I appreciate the gracious hospitality of the Iranian people yet also understand the chilling effect that totalitarian regimes impose on people. I am fond of Persian culture and it pains me to see your rich heritage plundered by brutal, power-hungry theocrats. I recall the inspired majesty of Isphahan, Persipolis, and the mystic poetry of Rumi: "Make yourself free from self at one stroke! As an American guest to Tehran in the years of the Shah and Savak, I appreciate the gracious hospitality of the Iranian people yet also understand the chilling effect that totalitarian regimes impose on people.
