Officers storm TV station in Zambia

Four policemen without warrants have raided television station Mobi TV in Lusaka, Zambia. They demanded for a copy of a programme addressing the controversial reappointment of an MP. Read more here

Nokia Siemens aiding Iran phone monitoring

As protests continue in Iran, details are emerging of the technology used to monitor citizens. Nokia Siemens Network has confirmed it supplied Iran with the technology needed to monitor, control, and read local telephone calls. It told the BBC that it sold a product called the Monitoring Centre to Iran Telecom in the second half of 2008. Read more here

China web censorship controversy continues

China has confirmed it will continue with plans to force every computer in the country to run controversial filtering program Green Dam. The move follows news that Google have agreed to filter search results in China to screen out pornographic or explicit material. In a Twitter posting, prominent blogger Ai Weiwei appealed for an Internet boycott on the softwares launch in July, the same day of the anniversary to mark founding of the Chinese Communist Party. Google executives face trial in Italy

The Italian trial of four Google executives accused of defamation for allowing a video to be posted online showing an autistic youth being abused, will begin today. They deny all chargesĀ  and say the case isĀ  “a direct attack on a free and open internet”. Read more here

Sarkozy speaks out against burka

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has spoken out strongly against the wearing of the burka by Muslim women in France. Mr Sarkozy also gave his backing to the establishment of a parliamentary commission to look at whether to ban the wearing of burkas in public. Read more here
