Cuba: US ticker turned off

An electronic sign that displayed human rights messages from the US interests section in Havana has been switched off. The scrolling display was switched on as part of an escalation of the US’s propaganda war in 2006. Read more here

Pope condemns Bible ‘vandalism’

The Pope has condemned a Scottish art exhibition which invites visitors to deface a copy of the Bible as “disgusting”. The exhibit at the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow was intended for the LGBT community who felt left out of religion to “write their way back in” to the holy book. A Vatican spokesperson said the project was “disgusting and offensive,” adding “they would not think of doing it to the Koran.” The Bible will remain on display in a glass case and the public will now have to write comments in another book alongside. Terror group threaten Brüno star

Palestinian militant organisation, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade that was ridiculed in the new Sacha Baron Cohen film has threatened to “respond in the way we find suitable” against the London-born satirist. The armed wing of the Fatah movement, has condemned the film Brüno , in which Cohen plays a gay Austrian fashionista, as “part of a conspiracy” against them. Read more here

AT & T blocks 4Chan?

AT&T is rumored to have blocked parts of the popular Internet forum 4Chan. “It’s come to our attention that AT&T is filtering/blocking img.4chan.org (/b/ & /r9k/) for many of their customers. There is no remedy at this time,” 4Chan reported on their official blog. Read more here

Germany: NDP plans “Nazi museum”

Jürgen Rieger, the vice-president of Germany’s far right NDP party, has submitted plans to open a museum intended to celebrate the Third Reich’s “Strength through Joy” programme. But critics have accused Rieger of using the museum as a way to spread pro-Nazi propaganda. Ralf Schmidt, a spokesman for the city, said: “We will use every legal means at our disposal to stop this from becoming a reality.” Read more here

China: blogger freed

Chinese blogger Duan Lei, who had been held since 25 February on charges of defamation and “disturbing the social order”, has been released by prosecutors due to a lack of evidence. Duan Lei’’s allegations that a local Communist party secretary had more cars than his position permits appeared on a total of six websites and were read by only 79 people. Read more here

Sudanese journalist fined for supporting colleague

In Sudan, Amal Habbani, the editor of the column Tiny Issues in Ajrass Al Horreya (Freedom Bells) newspaper, if being fined US$400,000 after she wrote an article on July 12 supporting her colleague Lubna Al Hussein. Hussein was recently tried for sensational dress. Both she and Habbani argue that this prosecution is an oppression of women.
