Ecuador: Journalist facing jail presents video evidence against president

23 Aug 2011

Columnist Emilio Palacio, who was last month sentenced to three years in prison and fined 40 million USD for calling Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa a “dictator,” presented a video to the district attorney on 18 August that he will use to appeal his sentence. Palacio presented an anonymous video in which Correa orders his agents to take control of police strikes and protests in September. In the video, Correa states that those responsible should be “shot in the chest for treason”. Palacio said the video contradicts the president’s original testimony that he did not order the military to fire on protesting police officers.

After I have heard president Correa so many times on the TV and radio and watched the video “evidence” that I can say that I am sure it’s not his voice, the video even just shows him from the back and far enough that it’s impossible to have that quality of audio.
Some journalists here in Ecuador are now so hurt that President Correa is asking for subsequent responsibility of what they publish (as you would have in the UK or Europe) that the media owners and journalists are doing even crazy things like this video to try and carry on with their immoral publications in the name of freedom.
I have seen, heard and read so many exaggerations and lies in most of the media here in Ecuador that I can not believe anything that comes from the main stream media.
    Yes, extremely sad.
