The contrast that you speak of between modernity and repression has been one of the most shocking things. Some students liked things on facebook or went to the Pearl rounabout as a natural part of curiosity believing that they were safe to do so. In many parts of the world this is typical behavior by students. After all, this is the phase in life of exploration and expression. If countries want to develop, they really have to allow students to question and think, not expel them!
