I work in the dog industry and I am seeing a very troubling trend in it. Now that people are seeing big dollars in dogs, Vets are willy nilly over prescribing drugs to dogs. From cortisone on every visit to valium and many other mood relaxers, when the dogs actually just need lots of walks and socialization. Unfortunately dogs have the least voice in society, and this easy target is where pharmacy companies are now going to make big money. I wonder how long before this even gets a little press?

In another life I used to work at one of the nations largest healthcare groups. They bought into the pharmacy business as it seemed a natural fit to their hospital and GP portfolio. The trouble with the whole healthcare system is that deregulation has meant that health is now all profit driven, not necessarily good outcome driven. And if you cant trust doctors who get kickbacks to do the right thing, who can you trust? Only more regulation, massive penalties and the regulators being overseen will close the loop on this money game.
