Uzbek photographer pledges to appeal guilty verdict

An award winning Uzbek photographer sentenced to jail after a court ruled she had insulted the nation, has been released thanks to an amnesty.  Umida Akhmedova said that she had done nothing wrong and will therefore appeal on the verdict. Akhmedova could have faced six months in jail or two years in a labour camp.

Ceausescu’s son seeks to ban play on the former Romanian dictator

Valentin Ceausescu is seeking to ban a play on the trail and execution of the former dictator. “The Last Hours of Ceausescu“, written by Milo Rau, depicts the 1989 trial and execution of former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife. Valentin’s lawyer said that the plaintiff is seeking to prevent his parents’ names being ridiculed. Valentin registered the “Ceausescu” trademark two years ago, meaning the name could no longer be used for commercial purposes without his consent.

The Observatory for the Freedom of Press, Publishing and Creation in Tunisia was set up as a monitoring body with the goal of tracking all forms of media and literary censorship, as well as censorship of other forms of artistic expression. Its aim is to identify, document and make public censorship of these various forms of expression.

Hello from Index Arts

By way of an introduction to this entry, I am going to start a regular blog about the work of Index Arts. This has been an almost totally static page for far too long but things are going to change. I plan to let you know what I am doing in the programme and share some thoughts on shows I see around town. I welcome your comments and responses. So let’s get going.
