Chávez, Ortega buy Nicaraguan opposition station

Channel 8, a critical TV station with the government, has been bought by a consortium created by presidents Daniel Ortega and Hugo Chávez. Details of the transaction had been kept secret, and Ortega’s possible control of the channel raised concern this week about attempts to silence the opposition. Read more here

Arrests issued for attack on Venezuelan journalists

A Caracas court ordered the arrests of two people allegedly involved in the attacks last week that left 12 journalists hurt when they were demonstrating in favor of freedom of expression. All of the journalists who were handing out leaflets to motorists and pedestrians on a busy street in the capital are employees of the Cadena Capriles group, one of Venezuela’s biggest media companies. Chávez stepping up media clampdown

Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez is said to be stepping up his campaign of hostility towards broadcasters he considers too critical of his regime. He said the government is developing eight new media related laws including one that creates a new set of “media crimes” punishable with prison sentences. Read more here

Chavez government attacks free press

A Venezuelan minister in Hugo Chavez’s government has announced plans to regulate cable subscription stations, saying the state would be “strict and severe” demonstrating this by fining opposition network Globovisión $2.3 million US dollars. Read more here

Chávez stops TV broadcast after debate row

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has halted a marathon edition of his programme Alo Presidente after challenging Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa to debate. Llosa replied that he would only debate directly with Chávez.  The programme did not reappear  in what has been hailed as an embarassing retreat.  Read more here

Anti-Chavez protesters take to streets in name of free press

In Venezuela hundreds of opponents of President Hugo Chavez marched in support of press freedom in Venezuela on Wednesday, two years after his government refused to renew the concession of an opposition-aligned television station. Read more here
