Over 300 people were reportedly arrested on Sunday in nationwide demonstrations against President
Alexander Lukashenko’s government. Teargas was also fired to disperse the crowd. Some journalists have claimed that they were targeted in the attacks in a bid to prevent them from filming or taking photographs. In the capital, Minsk, the crowds attempted to disrupt Lukashenko’s Independence Day by
clapping their hands.

A journalist received a written warning over an article in which he
questioned the Belarussian authorities’ claims to have arrested those responsible for April’s Minsk metro bombing. A prosecutor in Belarus’s eastern district issued a letter which also warns Nyarouny not to publish similar articles in the future.

The Belarusian “Public Council of Morality” have attempted to
tone down any suggestion of homosexuality during Elton John’s imminent performance in Minsk. State officials have asked the singer’s management for early Elton albums to ensure that they are not “inconsistent with the law and morality”. Previous pride march attempts have been
broken up by police in a state attempt to “prevent the promotion of homosexuality”.
