Montenegro: Newspaper’s cars torched

Two cars belonging to Vijesti, one of Montenegro‘s most popular independent daily newspapers, were torched last Thursday. The cars were parked opposite the headquarters of the Montenegrin Intelligence Agency when the attack took place. One eyewitness reported seeing a young man pour petrol on the cars and throw a spark towards them but police have yet to make an arrest. Vijesti is one of the two biggest Montenegrin newspapers and reports regularly on corruption and government malpractice.

Moldavan journalist arrested for spying in breakaway republic

Acting Moldavian president, Mihai Ghimpu, has condemned the arrest of a journalist in the breakaway republic of Transnistria. On April 7, Ernest Vardanean, a reporter for the Transnistrian Now Region 2 news agency, was arrested and charged with treason. He is accused of being a spy for Moldova, and could face 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Moldova drops Tweeter charges

Moldova’s Prosecutor General Office has dropped criminal proceedings against the people accused of using social networking websites to organise violent street protests in Chisinau in April, following the ppposition protest against the results of the parliamentary election. The key suspects were journalists Natalia Morar, Oleg Bregha, and Gabriel Stati, the son of one of Moldova’s richest businessman. Morar has admitted using Twitter after the controversial 5 April parliamentary elections, but said she never intended for violence to occur and is not responsible for those actions. Thousands of people took part in the protests organised by the opposition parties, who came to power after a second poll in July. Read more here
