Sudan: Newspapers halt publication in protest at state censorship

Two independent Sudanese newspapers, al-Maidan and Ajras al-Hurriya, are halting publication in protest at government censorship. Whilst Ajras has had its distribution blocked since Wednesday, al-Maidan has been barred from circulation three times already this month. The government has stepped up censorship in the wake of anti-government protests which started in January of this year.  

Nigerian editor threatened with defamation charges

Mallam Tukur, editor and publisher of Desert Herald, an independent weekly in Kaduna state, has been arrested and threatened with prosecution on defamation charges. The Committee to Protect Journalists claim the threats are related to a recent article accusing Yobe’s Governor Ibrahim Geidam of corruption.

Kurdish newspaper editor jailed for 21 years

Ozan Kilinc, editor of Kurdish newspaper Azadiya Welat, has been sentenced to 21 years in jail for publishing ‘Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) propaganda’. Comments or acts judged supportive of the PKK are a serious crime in Turkey. The PKK, branded a terrorist organisation, launched an armed campaign for Kurdish self-rule in 1984.

Gambia Press Union members in hiding

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in Gambia has closed down The Point newspaper and forced two journalists and an executive member of the Gambia Press Union into hiding. Read more here
