{"id":13659,"date":"2010-01-30T18:38:04","date_gmt":"2010-01-30T18:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=13659"},"modified":"2012-04-25T17:29:48","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T16:29:48","slug":"protest-free-belarus-tom-stoppard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=13659","title":{"rendered":"PAST EVENT: Protesting for a free Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Britain\u2019s theatre community comes out against oppression and censorship in the \u201clast dictatorship of Europe\u201d.\u00a0 Join the protest in London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sir Tom Stoppard <\/strong>and actor\/director <strong>Samuel West<\/strong> are leading a protest of high-profile theatre practitioners outside the Belarussian Embassy at 6 Kensington Court, London, W8 5DL on Thursday 1<sup>st<\/sup> July at 11.30am.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->They will present an open letter to President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus calling for greater democratic freedom and for an end to censorship of the internet. Other signatories include <strong>Mark Ravenhill<\/strong>, <strong>Howard Brenton<\/strong>, <strong>Alan Rickman<\/strong>, <strong>Laura Wade<\/strong>, <strong>Caryl Churchill,<\/strong> <strong>Henry Goodman<\/strong>, <strong>Henry Porter<\/strong>, <strong>Simon McBurney<\/strong>, <strong>Simon Stephens<\/strong> and <strong>Lyndsey Turner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday 1<sup>st<\/sup> July a new presidential decree on the internet comes into force. It gives the authorities greater powers to monitor usage and will enable the government to restrict or block access to websites that offer independent and alternative sources of information. It has been described as \u201ca step in the wrong direction\u201d by the European Union.\u00a0 The decree is a clear attempt to curb freedom of speech and the right to self-expression.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel West will perform an extract of Generation Jeans, a play from the multi-award winning Belarus Free Theatre. \u201cGeneration Jeans charts one man&#8217;s journey as an activist.\u00a0 It captures\u00a0all of\u00a0the courage, the humour and the foolhardy determination that you need to resist a totalitarian\u00a0regime, which makes it perfect for our protest today,&#8221; says director Clare Lizzimore, co-organiser of the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Playwright and co-organiser of the protest, Alexandra Wood says, &#8220;the internet is a vital tool in communication and should be available to all.
