\"awards08\"Index on Censorship today announces the shortlist for the 2009 Freedom of Expression Awards. <\/strong>

\nThe awards, presented in association with the Economist<\/em>, the Guardian<\/em>, Bindmans and the Robert Gavron Trust, honour those who have furthered the cause of freedom of expression and battled censorship around the world.<\/p>\n

Prizes are awarded in five categories: books, film, journalism, and law and campaigning.<\/p>\n

Previous winners include Arat Dink, Anna Politkovskaya and Edward Said.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s shortlist includes Sri Lanka\u2019s Sunday Leader <\/em>newspaper, Ma Jian\u2019s novel Beijing Coma<\/em>, and Steve McQueen\u2019s film, Hunger<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The awards will be presented on 21 April at Kings Place, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Index on Censorship Chair Jonathan Dimbleby<\/strong>, with a keynote speech by Sir David Hare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Index on Censorship Chief Executive John Kampfner<\/strong> commented: \u2018The Freedom of Expression Awards focus attention on activists, writers and film makers around the world who actively promote free expression, often in the most difficult circumstances. The T R Fyvel Book Award nominees are: <\/strong>
\nRebel\u2019s Hour<\/em> by Lieve Joris (Atlantic Books)
\nBejing Coma <\/em>by Ma Jian (Chatto and Windus)
\nHuman Smoke<\/em> by Nicholson Baker (Simon and Schuster)
\nA Field Guide for Female Interrogators<\/em> by Coco Fusco (Seven Stories Press)<\/p>\n

The Bindmans Law and Campaigning Award nominees are:<\/strong>
\nGamal Eid, Egyptian human rights champion and regional campaigner for freedom of expression.
\nHarrison Nkomo, a human rights lawyer defending journalists in Zimbabwe.
\nHarry Roque, a campaigner for human rights and media freedom in the Philippines.
\nMalak Imtiaz, a human rights lawyer and activist and the current president of the National Human Rights Society (HAKAM) of Malaysia.<\/p>\n

The Index on Censorship Film Award nominees are: <\/strong>
\nHunger, Dir. Steve McQueen (Pathe).
\nThe Devil Came on Horseback, Dir. Ricki Stern (Dogwoof).
\nTerror\u2019s Advocate, Dir. Barbet Schroeder (Artificial Eye).
\nOn the Verge, directed and distributed by SchMovies.<\/p>\n

The Guardian Journalism Award nominees are: <\/strong>
\nThe Sunday Leader<\/em>, a platform for some of Sri Lanka\u2019s most outspoken journalism despite its editor\u2019s assassination.
\nSanjuana Martinez, an award-winning freelance journalist investigating and exposing corruption in Mexico.
\nTamer Almisshal, the youngest reporter for the Arabic television network, Al Jazeera, who reported from the recent invasion and bombardment of Gaza.
\nSakit and Genimet Zakhidov, who are both serving prison sentences for their dedication to freedom of speech after writing articles and poetry critical of Azerbaijan\u2019s authoritarian government.<\/p>\n

The Economist New Media Award nominees are:<\/strong>
\nGlobal Voices Advocacy, an international network for bloggers and activists.
\nPsiphon, a computer programme and network created to circumvent censorship, Canada.
\nHossein \u2018Hodder\u2019 Derakhshan an Iranian blogger.
\nMizzima, a Burmese-exile run news website.<\/p>\n
