{"id":25216,"date":"2011-08-02T10:59:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T09:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=25216"},"modified":"2011-08-02T10:59:00","modified_gmt":"2011-08-02T09:59:00","slug":"belarus-draft-law-prevents-citizens-gathering-in-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=25216","title":{"rendered":"Belarus: Draft law prevents citizens gathering in public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A draft law published in <a title=\"Index on Censorship: Belarus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/tag\/belarus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Belarus<\/a> on Friday <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/07\/30\/world\/europe\/30belarus.html?_r=1&amp;partner=rssnyt&amp;emc=rss\">prohibits <\/a>the \u201cjoint mass presence of citizens in a public place that has been chosen beforehand, including an outdoor space, and at a scheduled time for the purpose of a form of action or inaction that has been planned beforehand and is a form of public expression of the public or political sentiments or protest.\u201d The draft adds that anyone proven to be taking part in such a gathering would be subject to 15 days of administrative arrest.\u00a0The Belarusian government is continuing to develop various <a href=\"http:\/\/globalvoicesonline.org\/2011\/07\/06\/belarus-independence-day-clapping-protest\/\">methods <\/a>of stifling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/07\/belarus-protesters-rally-on-the-web\/\">protest<\/a>\u00a0in the country. Demonstrators have been equally creative in finding ways to rally against\u00a0President Lukashenko and the country&#8217;s economic crisis.
