One of the writers championed by Index on Censorship and English PEN to mark 50 years of the Writers in Prison Committee, Uzbek journalist Djamshid Karimov was released from a psychiatric hospital on 30 November.<\/p>\n

Djamshid Karimov, nephew of Uzbek president Islam Karimov, is an\u00a0outspoken critic of the government, known for reporting on socio-political\u00a0issues. He worked as a freelance journalist for the Institute for War and\u00a0Peace Reporting<\/a>, and contributed to independent newspapers and online\u00a0publications under the pseudonym Andrei Nazarov.\u00a0After reporting on the Andijan massacre<\/a> in May 2005, during a period\u00a0when his uncle systematically sought to silence all independent voices of\u00a0protest, Karimov and his family were subjected to intense police surveillance.<\/p>\n

In August 2006, after applying for an exit visa to attend a journalism seminar\u00a0in Kyrgyzstan, Karimov\u2019s passport was seized by the authorities. The head\u00a0of the regional administration in Jizak visited the family home on 31 August,\u00a0and offered Karimov positions at two state newspapers, apparently in a bid\u00a0to entice him away from independent journalism. He refused and shortly\u00a0afterwards, on 12 September, he disappeared.\u00a0Two weeks later, Karimov\u2019s friends discovered that he was being held\u00a0against his will in a psychiatric hospital in Samarkand, initially under a six-month\u00a0detention order. The authorities would not specify the reason for his\u00a0detention, calling it a “private matter”. His fianc\u00e9e was permitted to visit him\u00a0and found him distressed by his detention; he had reportedly been forced to\u00a0accept unnecessary treatment and anti-psychotic medication.<\/p>\n

Karimov\u2019s detention order was “reviewed” in March 2007 and extended\u00a0for six months, but authorities disclosed no further details. Since then, as far\u00a0as his family knows, the court has not officially passed a decision to further\u00a0extend Karimov\u2019s treatment. Nonetheless, despite regular promises that he\u00a0would soon be discharged, he remains incarcerated. Karimov has now been\u00a0undergoing forced treatment for more than four years.<\/p>\n
