{"id":46394,"date":"2013-05-21T12:41:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-21T11:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=46394"},"modified":"2017-05-09T09:58:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T08:58:00","slug":"azerbaijani-journalist-reports-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=46394","title":{"rendered":"Azerbaijani journalist reports threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Index Award-winning Azerbaijani journalist Idrak Abbasov says he had been threatened by the family of a man who was arrested after an online posting, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irfs.az\/\">Institute for Reporters\u2019 Freedom and Safety<\/a> (IRFS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI interviewed Lankaran resident Shahin Agayev, whose daughter was beaten at school, on 14 January and posted it on the internet,&#8221; Abbasov told the IRFS.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ImkuQU2xsxo\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Agayev was arrested on drug charges on 6 February and a verdict is expected to be announced soon. Abbasov says the charges are clearly false as Agayev \u201cis really poor, he lives literally in a hut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abbasov said that the man&#8217;s family blamed him for the arrest via a phone call on 13 May. The family representative told Abbasov that they had &#8220;an agreement with the police&#8221; that Agayev would be released if he stopped covering the story.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, Abbasov reported to Index on Censorship that a man identifying himself as Agayev\u2019s brother-in-law called and told him the police had demanded the original video, above, be deleted, despite widespread sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, the man called Abbasov again &#8212; this time to arrange a meeting about a potential story.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have worked in Azerbaijan for long enough to understand it is a trap,&#8221; Abbasov said. Sources confirmed his suspicions.
