Andrei Aliaksandrau reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49035\" src=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev.jpg\" alt=\"Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev\" width=\"700\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev-250x145.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Akhmednabi-Akhmednabiev-343x200.jpg 343w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nAn unknown person fired numerous shots at the journalist, who was driving just 50 metres away from his house in a suburb of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, one of the Caucasian republics of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe the murder may be connected to Akhmednabiev\u2019s journalistic activities.<\/p>\n<p>Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was Deputy Editor of \u201cNovoe Delo\u201d (New Business) magazine and a reporter for website \u201cKavkazskiy Uzel\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/eng.kavkaz-uzel.ru\/\">Caucasian Knot<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>His name appeared on the so-called \u201cexecution list\u201d of 16 lawyers, journalists and human rights defenders, mentioned in leaflets disseminated anonymously in 2009 in Dagestan. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/12\/russian-newspaper-founder-shot-dead-in-north-caucasus\/\">Gadjimurad Kamalov<\/a> the publisher of the \u201cChernovik\u201d independent newspaper whose name also appeared on the list, was killed in December 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Akhmednabiev received threats of death in May 2012. In January this year he survived an assassination, when his car was fired on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are serious suspicions about who was involved in Akhmednabiev\u2019s assassination, as he actively reported on human rights violations and repressions against Muslims by the police and Russian army,\u201d Abdulla Duduev, the Chief Editor of DOSH magazine, told Index. \u201cNo one believes this is simply the act of criminal gunmen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Memorial Human Rights Centre said: \u201cMurdering a journalist is always cruel; it is even crueller as it happened on the first day of Ramadan, a sacred month for all Muslims. Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev was one of the few journalists in Dagestan who reported on \u2018anti-terror\u2019 measures and how \u2018fighting terrorism\u2019 was used as a pretext for persecution of religious communities and mass violations of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/2013\/02\/attacks-on-the-press-in-2012-russia.php\"> Committee to Protect Journalists<\/a>, 54 reporters have been killed in Russia since 1992, with 16 cases still unsolved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Index on Censorship calls on Russian authorities to investigate Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev&#8217;s murder and bring those who ordered and implemented it account.
