However, Navalny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themoscownews.com\/news\/20130718\/191775625\/Opposition-leader-Navalny-sentenced-to-5-years-in-penal-colony.html\">will not<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themoscownews.com\/news\/20130718\/191775625\/Opposition-leader-Navalny-sentenced-to-5-years-in-penal-colony.html\">\u00a0be<\/a> formally removed from the race until the ruling goes into effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Navalny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/jul\/18\/alexei-navalny-found-guilty-embezzlement\">has insisted<\/a> that the charges are politically motivated, as he has been a vocal critic of Vladimir Putin&#8217;s United Russia Party. The 37-year-old was also one of the prominent voices of the country&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/2012\/05\/russia-putin-inauguration-protest\/\">historic mass protests<\/a> against Putin last year.<\/p>\n<p>The court has dismissed allegations that the charges were political, but critics have insisted that it is politically motivated, including US Ambassador Michael McFaul:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>We are deeply disappointed in the conviction of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/navalny\">@Navalny<\/a> and the apparent political motivations in this trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michael McFaul (@McFaul) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McFaul\/statuses\/357808114847846402\">July 18, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UK Foreign Secretary William Hague also voiced concerns:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>Concerned by conviction of Alexei Navalny, selective justice in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Russia&amp;src=hash\">#Russia<\/a> and lack of adherence to international human rights obligations<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 William Hague (@WilliamJHague) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamJHague\/statuses\/357816765788598272\">July 18, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\"><\/script><br \/>\nIn\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.interpretermag.com\/before-the-sentence\/\">a Livejournal post<\/a>\u00a0before the ruling yesterday, Navalny called on supporters to organise, and called Putin&#8217;s government &#8220;a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pjf3BCMPxTo&amp;feature=youtu.be\">blowfish<\/a>\u00a0or a Latin American toad which puffs itself up upon seeing danger, with the help of television, which shows lying prostitute TV anchors or the freaks from the Investigative Committee in blue uniforms muttering that they\u2019re going to put everybody in jail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, even before the sentence was announced, riot police <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/19\/world\/europe\/russian-court-convicts-opposition-leader-aleksei-navalny.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0\">began block access <\/a>to Moscow&#8217;s Manezh Square, where supporters of Navalny have planned to meet later on today to discuss the verdict.
