Authorities are trying to uncover the source of a recording that is said\u00a0to be of the\u00a0Republika Srpska Prime Minister Zeljka Cvijanovic.<\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jgka-jioUpA\">recorded conversation<\/a> a woman&#8217;s voice can be heard admitting that her party bought two MPs to ensure its majority in the national assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Irfan Nefic, a police spokesman, said\u00a0the raid by about half a dozen police officers was ordered by a Sarajevo court, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2014\/12\/29\/world\/europe\/ap-eu-bosnia-police-raid.html\">the Associated Press reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The search started at 8.30 am on Monday, 29 December 2014, and lasted more than seven hours. Four Klix.ba workers were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slobodnaevropa.org\/content\/reakcije-upadom-u-redakciju-klix-ba-policija-zastrasuje-medije\/26767984.html\">held<\/a>\u00a0at their offices for questioning. During the investigation\u00a0police <a href=\"http:\/\/www.klix.ba\/vijesti\/bih\/epilog-pretresa-klix-ba-onesposobljeno-19-racunara-urednik-i-direktor-ostali-bez-mobitela\/141229111\">copied materials from the newsroom\u2019s computers<\/a>. At a post raid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xIwC9l2ASNA\">press conference<\/a>, Dario Simic, the portal director, and Jasmin Hadziahmetovic, editor in chief, said that police seized 19 computers hard drives, USB memory flash-sticks, CDs, documents, notes and their private mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>The raid followed\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/mediafreedom.ushahidi.com\/reports\/view\/565\">interrogation of Simic and Hadziahmetovic<\/a> by Banja Luka police on 4 December 2014. Police had demanded they\u00a0reveal the identity of the person that gave them the recorded conversation. The journalist and the director of the portal refused to identify their source. The incriminating recording was posted online in mid-November, after the Bosnian general elections, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaninsight.com\/en\/article\/police-raids-bosnia-s-most-popular-online-media-newsroom\">local media reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>National journalists associations called the raid a\u00a0dark day for Bosnian journalism and characterized the police action as \u201cattack on the publics\u2019 right to know and to be informed,\u201d said Dario Novalic, the head of <a href=\"http:\/\/english.vzs.ba\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=1978%3Areaction-of-the-press-council-in-bih-to-the-police-raid-and-blockade-of-the-editorial-staff-of-klixba-29122014&amp;catid=12%3Aannouncements&amp;Itemid=15&amp;lang=en\">the Press Council in Bosnia<\/a>, a self-regulatory body for print and online media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch an act, of the worst kind of pressure on the freedom of information and media freedom, is a direct attempt of deterring journalists from publishing information in the public\u2019s interest and sends a message of what will happen to any media who publishes in the public\u2019s interest,\u201d Novalic said.<\/p>\n<p>Borka Rudic, secretary general of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bhnovinari.ba\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=689%3Ajavni-zahtjev-policiji-ks-i-mupa-rs-da-hitno-obustave-pretres-prostorija-portala-klixba&amp;catid=62%3Asaopenja&amp;Itemid=240&amp;lang=bs\">Bosnian Journalists Association<\/a>, said that journalists have the right to protect their sources and that the raid is \u201cunacceptable\u201d. &#8220;This is the most brutal attack on freedom of speech and journalist rights ever recorded in Bosnia,&#8221; Rudic said.<\/p>\n<p>Association of Journalists of the Republika Srpska <a href=\"http:\/\/novinarirs.com\/?p=564\">strongly condemned the police raid<\/a> and appealed to international organizations to put pressure on local institutions to\u00a0respect media freedom.<\/p>\n<p>OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovi\u0107 said\u00a0that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osce.org\/fom\/129941\">protection of sources is one of journalists\u2019 key privileges and it must be safeguarded<\/a>. \u201cInterrogation and pressure on members of the media to reveal their sources is simply unacceptable,\u201d Mijatovi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n<p>She urged the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to do their utmost to stop persecuting journalists and to respect their right to protect their sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a grave and disproportionate intrusion into the journalists\u2019 right to report about public interest issues,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osce.org\/fom\/133056\">Mijatovi\u0107 said<\/a>. &#8220;While fully recognizing the importance of rule of law, I consider this case to constitute unacceptable treatment of the media in a democratic society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/balkans.aljazeera.net\/vijesti\/policija-pretresa-bh-portal-klixba-1\">Al Jazeera Balkans<\/a> reported that the police are investigating how the media got the recording. Officials suspect that the recording was obtained by unauthorized phone tapping.<\/p>\n<p>After the raid, a police officer struck a photographer with a backpack because he was unhappy he had been photographed.
