{"id":7364,"date":"2012-01-12T15:12:04","date_gmt":"2012-01-12T15:12:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7364"},"modified":"2019-09-16T13:28:15","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T12:28:15","slug":"peter-hill-express-mccann-leveson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=7364","title":{"rendered":"Ex Express editor says McCann stories boosted circulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The former editor of the Daily Express has denied claims made to the <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Leveson Inquiry\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/category\/leveson-inquiry-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leveson Inquiry<\/a> that he was &#8220;<a title=\"Index on Censorship - McCann coverage an &quot;obsession&quot; for Express editor, Inquiry told\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/2011\/12\/21\/mccann-coverage-obsession-leveson-inquiry\/\">obsessed<\/a>&#8221; over coverage of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Hill\u00a0said it was an &#8220;international story on an enormous scale&#8221; and that\u00a0there was an &#8220;enormous clamour&#8221; for information.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was not a story you could ignore&#8221;, he said, &#8220;you simply had to cover it as best you could.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hill said it was &#8220;nothing to do with an obsession&#8221;, adding that the &#8220;entire country&#8221; had an opinion about the 2007 disappearance of McCann.<\/p>\n<p>Express reporter Nick Fagge told the Leveson Inquiry in December that Hill had &#8220;decided it was the only story he was interested in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There was a tense exchange between Hill and Robert Jay QC, during which Hill accused the Inquiry counsel of putting him &#8220;on trial&#8221; during questioning about the tabloid&#8217;s McCann coverage. Lord Justice Leveson reassured him he was not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did not accuse them of killing their child. The story that I ran were the people that did accuse them and those were the Portuguese police,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that there was &#8220;reason to believe that they might possibly be true.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked by Jay about checking the accuracy of the stories, Hill said: &#8220;We did the best we could do which was not very much.&#8221; He added\u00a0that the McCann stories boosted circulation &#8220;on many days&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Madeleine&#8217;s parents\u00a0accepted \u00a3550,000 in damages and an apology from Express Newspapers in March 2008 for what the company said were\u00a0&#8220;<a title=\"Index on Censorship - Gerry McCann calls for press reform at Leveson Inquiry\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/2011\/11\/23\/mccanns-media-leveson-inquiry-press-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entirely untrue<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0and \u201cdefamatory\u201d articles.
