{"id":92115,"date":"2010-12-23T11:37:01","date_gmt":"2010-12-23T11:37:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=464"},"modified":"2010-12-23T11:37:01","modified_gmt":"2010-12-23T11:37:01","slug":"china-great-firewall-weibo-fang-binxing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92115","title":{"rendered":"How not to win friends on China\u2019s internet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the main men behind China\u2019s Great Firewall recently got a taste of his own medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Fang Binxing, credited with building a system which is used to block websites in China, shut down his microblog earlier this week after Chinese netizens, angry at censorship, bombarded his newly-opened microblogging account with angry comments.<\/p>\n<p>Fang, the president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, reportedly asked Sina, the owner of the very popular twitter-like service <a href=\"http:\/\/t.sina.com.cn\/\">weibo<\/a>, to delete his blog, after several hours of apparently trying to delete the flood of comments as they poured in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2010\/12\/netizens-force-fan-binxing-father-of-the-gfw-off-of-sina-microblog\/\">China Digital Times<\/a> has reproduced some of the more colourful comments left on Fang\u2019s weibo including: \u201cf\u2013-k you 404 times\u201d [ a reference to the \u2018404 error\u2019 message which occasionally appears when pages are blocked]; a suggestion that if Fang is unhappy with the comments he could simply block weibo itself now; and \u201ca Twitter user is here to laugh at Eunuch Fang\u2019s Great Firewall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/chinarealtime\/2010\/12\/20\/father-of-chinas-great-firewall-shouted-off-own-microblog\/\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> said people were alerted to Fang\u2019s weibo account when the 50-year-old professor sent a message to a famous TV anchor Jing Yidan: \u201cHi, I\u2019m on Weibo now, although I don\u2019t dare be as outspoken as you all, haha.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/china.globaltimes.cn\/society\/2010-12\/603375.html\">Global Times<\/a>, a local English-language paper, carried the story, but was careful to balance it with comments that cited unnamed sources as saying the censorship was necessary to protect national security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the main men behind China\u2019s Great Firewall recently got a taste of his own medicine.
