{"id":92239,"date":"2011-10-06T15:03:37","date_gmt":"2011-10-06T15:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=2005"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:21:41","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:21:41","slug":"egypt-journalists-strike-against-censorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92239","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: Journalists strike against censorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Belal Fadl blank column\" src=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/AbDo7bnCIAAXfZ3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"341\" \/>Several Egyptian writers and journalists published <a title=\"Ahram online - Egyptian journalists strike on paper against army censorship\" href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/64\/23406\/Egypt\/Politics-\/Egyptian-journalists-strike-on-paper-against-army-.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blank columns<\/a> in the country&#8217;s newspapers, in protest against the &#8220;military interference&#8221; of the press.<\/p>\n<p>A number of independent writers, including Belal Fadl, Naglaa Bedir and Tarek El-Shenawy,\u00a0wrote only a uniform note in their regular columns: \u201cI did not write today in protest against censorship, confiscation of newspapers and the presence of military censors on papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other opinion columnists from the daily <a title=\"El-Youm-El-Sabee\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youm7.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">El-Youm El-Sabee<\/a> newspaper &#8212; Abdel Rahman Youssef, Akram El-Kasas, Saied El-Shahat and Alaa El-Shafei &#8212; followed the lead of the lead, also leaving their columns blank.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;blank columns&#8221; campaign follows a range of recent attacks on the press from authorities. Recently, there have been <a title=\"Index on Censorship - POLICE RAID AL JAZEERA OFFICES\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/09\/egypt-police-raid-al-jazeera-offices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two raids<\/a> on the Al Jazeera offices within a month, editions of two newspapers have been seized and destroyed, features have been <a title=\"Index on Censorship - AUTHORITIES BLOCK PUBLICATION OF CONTROVERSIAL FEATURE\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/09\/egypt-authorities-block-publication-of-controversial-feature\/\">blocked<\/a>, and official warnings have been sent to Egyptian satellite TV channels regarding the content of political programmes.<\/p>\n<p>Some writers, including Amr Hamzawy from newspaper <a title=\"Sourouk news\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shorouk<\/a>, wanted to join the campaign, but were prevented from doing so by their editors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to leave my column blank today but I couldn\u2019t, so, instead, I am writing an opinion piece under the name of \u2018Whitening the Column\u2019 about the campaign,\u201d Hamzawy told <a title=\"Ahram\" href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ahram Online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that the government is planning a further clampdown on the media ahead of parliamentary polls next month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several Egyptian writers and journalists published blank columns in the country&#8217;s newspapers, in protest against the &#8220;military interference&#8221; of the press.
