Death threats forced Escobar to flee\u00a0her home with her family after she denounced a vigilante group in the town of Panajachel. Escobar claimed the group&#8217;s &#8220;social cleansing&#8221; activities were promoted by local government officials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/noticias.com.gt\/departamentales\/20111103-periodista-amenazada-denunciar-abusos-solola.html\" target=\"_blank\">Escobar<\/a>&#8216;s story was published in the Guatemalan daily El Periodico, it\u00a0accused the town mayor, Gerardo Higueros of turning a local citizens group into a death squad with the help of an unidentified fundamentalist Christian group. The vigilante organisation is apparently cleansing the town of Panajachel of \u201cundesirables\u201d, including beggars and homeless people. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.s21.com.gt\/nacionales\/2011\/10\/31\/piden-proteccion-justicia-para-periodista-lucia-escobar\" target=\"_blank\">Within days of writing about<\/a>\u00a0the problems,the mayor, Higueros, who is also \u00a0director of a local television news show, dedicated a couple of hours in a television broadcast to accusing Escobar of lying about the story and trafficking drugs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/threatened.globalvoicesonline.org\/blogger\/lucia-escobar-lucha\" target=\"_blank\">Escobar<\/a>\u00a0said she knows that despite a number of complaints to local police about the armed group&#8217;s activities, none of the cases have been investigated by the authorities.\u00a0 Escobar left her home in Panajachel in early November, and she is still at a loss. \u201cI had no idea it was going to turn into this,\u201d she said in Guatemala City.\u00a0 She is not planning to return to Panajachel until the situation is cleared up.\u00a0 El Periodico complained about the lack of reaction\u00a0from government authorities in Guatemala City\u00a0to\u00a0the attacks against its reporter.<\/p>\n<p>In May another journalist in the provinces was killed after receiving death threats.\u00a0Yensi Roberto Ordo\u00f1ez Gald\u00e1mez, a television reporter was found murdered in his car.
