{"id":92451,"date":"2012-05-14T15:10:05","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T15:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=5316"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:20:25","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:20:25","slug":"tunisia-newspaper-director-on-hunger-strike-in-protest-at-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92451","title":{"rendered":"Tunisia: newspaper director on hunger strike in protest at government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nebil Jridet, General Director of the Arabic-language weekly newspaper Al-Oula, has entered his sixth day of hunger strike in protest against the <a title=\"UNCUT: Tunisia\" href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/tag\/tunisia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tunisian<\/a> government&#8217;s &#8220;unequal&#8221; distribution of state ads among newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Jridet told Index that the government is distributing state ads according to \u201cnewspapers\u2019 political affiliations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government favours newspapers affiliated with certain political parties, and dedicated to defaming the opposition. Al-Fajr [a weekly newspaper affiliated to Ennahdha Movement, the largest party in Tunisia\u2019s governing alliance], for instance, has a large share in state ads\u201d, said Mr. Jridet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask the government to support newspapers by an equal and transparent distribution of state advertisement&#8221;, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Jridet fears that his newspaper, which he describes as \u201cindependent\u201d, may meet the same fate as many other \u201cserious and credible newspapers which became known right after the revolution\u201d that were eventually forced to fold and disappear from Tunisia&#8217;s media landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconomic forces which monopolise the distribution circuits of newspapers, and political forces which interfere in the equitable distribution of state advertisement\u201d deprived these newspapers from getting their share of state ads and made them disappear, said Jridet in a statement published on 9 May.<\/p>\n<p>Sofiene Chourabi, a journalist for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, Hana Trabelsi a journalist for Al-Oula, and Walid Hayouni, a professor at a Tunis journalism school have allegedly joined Jridet in his hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"View Statement - Wild Hunger Srike on Scribd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/93494453\/Statement-Wild-Hunger-Srike\">Statement &#8211; Wild Hunger Srike<\/a><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"doc_97871\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/93494453\/content?start_page=1&amp;view_mode=list&amp;access_key=key-hzl0s6tqjm1hjzyiysb\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" data-auto-height=\"true\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.706697459584296\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nebil Jridet, General Director of the Arabic-language weekly newspaper Al-Oula, has entered his sixth day of hunger strike in protest against the Tunisian government&#8217;s &#8220;unequal&#8221; distribution of state ads among newspapers.
