{"id":92476,"date":"2012-06-06T10:59:32","date_gmt":"2012-06-06T10:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=5731"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:20:01","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:20:01","slug":"graffiti-artist-claims-censorship-at-tunis-arts-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92476","title":{"rendered":"Graffiti artist claims censorship at Tunis Arts Spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tunisian graffiti artist <a title=\"Elektro Jaye\" href=\"http:\/\/elecktrojaye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elektro Jaye<\/a>\u00a0was recently censored at the Tunis Pintemps des Arts (Spring of Arts), a modern contemporary art fair which\u00a0<a title=\"Marsa Arts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marsa-arts.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exhibited<\/a>\u00a0more than 500 art works this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the fair&#8217;s organisers Luca Luccattini literally told me that the state had put pressure on him to remove my posters\u201d, Elektro Jaye told Index.<\/p>\n<p>Lucattini, the fair\u2019s director, told <a title=\"Webdo.tn\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webdo.tn\/2012\/06\/03\/selon-le-directeur-du-printemps-des-arts-aucune-oeuvre-n-a-ete-censuree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Webdo.tn<\/a> that one piece by the artist has been taken down, but for administrative reasons rather than pressure from authorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Tunisian-Graffiti.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-5732\" title=\"Tunisian-Graffiti\" src=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Tunisian-Graffiti.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a title=\"Elektro Jaye graffiti \" href=\"http:\/\/elecktrojaye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Serie-Re%CC%81publique-Islai%CC%88que-de-Tunisie-Elecktrojaye-%C2%A9-2011.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">artwork<\/a> in question (on the far left) features the star and crescent from Tunisia&#8217;s flag, along with the Christian cross and the Star of David. \u00a0The images are combined with the phrase &#8220;La R\u00e9publique Isla\u00efque \u00a0de Tunisie&#8221;, which translates as &#8220;The Islaic Republic of Tunisia&#8221;. Islaic is a play on words, \u201cIs\u201d being taken from \u201cIslam\u201d and \u201claic\u201d from the French word for secularism, &#8220;la\u00efque&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe idea suggested here is that the religious should not interfere with the state\u2019s decisions, nothing more! In my posters there is only a message of peace, and tolerance,\u201d says\u00a0Elektro Jaye.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tunisia has had a heated debate about secularism and Islamism, dominating political discussions in the months following the fall of Ben Ali. Many Tunisian artists did not hide their desire for a secular state, and have used their work to express their view that religion should be kept aside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While Elektro Jaye was unable to display his work at the art fair, he eventually succeeded in having his work displayed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAicha Gorgi\u00a0suggested that I display my works in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galerie-ammar-farhat.com\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her gallery<\/a>. Some scandalmongers have been suggesting that this was just a marketing ploy.
