{"id":92481,"date":"2012-06-13T08:58:31","date_gmt":"2012-06-13T08:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=5814"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:19:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:19:55","slug":"nawaat-ramzi-bettaieb-tunisia-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92481","title":{"rendered":"Tunisian journalist ends hunger strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/nawaat.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5829\" title=\"nawaat\" src=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/nawaat.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Journalist and activist <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Tunisian journalist Ramzi Bettaieb on hunger strike \" href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/2012\/06\/tunisian-journalist-ramzi-bettaieb-on-hunger-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ramzi Bettaieb<\/a> ended a 15-day hunger strike yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Three other activists and bloggers, Azyz Amami, Houcem Hajlaoui and Emine M\u2019tiraoui, who went on hunger strike in solidarity with Bettaieb have also ended their action.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Index on Censorship - Tunisian journalist Ramzi Bettaieb on hunger strike \" href=\"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/2012\/06\/tunisian-journalist-ramzi-bettaieb-on-hunger-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bettaieb<\/a>, who works for the blogger&#8217;s collective Nawaat,\u00a0went on hunger strike to highlight the lack of transparency\u00a0in a crucial case being tried in front of a military court. On 21 May, the military authorities confiscated two of Bettaieb\u2019s cameras\u00a0as he tried to cover trials at the Military Tribunal of El Kef in the investigation of the murder of protesters during the 2011 Tunisian revolution<\/p>\n<p>Tunisian journalists\u2019 video coverage of court hearings is currently restricted to three minutes inside court rooms and\u00a0Bettaieb accuses the military of deliberately preventing journalists from documenting what Nawaat has described as \u201cthe most important trials of Tunisia\u2019s modern history\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Bettaieb has now his cameras back, and the support of Tunisia\u2019s constituent assembly, which pledged to look into his demands of lifting the restrictions on journalists and activists seeking to cover the court hearings in the martyrs&#8217; case.<\/p>\n<p>Bettaieb has also demanded the case be tried instead by an independent judicial structure instead of miltary judges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur bodies\u2019 powers are limited, but our determination is unlimited,\u201d Bettaieb said at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Journalist and activist Ramzi Bettaieb ended a 15-day hunger strike yesterday.
