{"id":92483,"date":"2012-06-14T15:06:30","date_gmt":"2012-06-14T15:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=5869"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:19:54","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:19:54","slug":"bahrain-reaches-verdict-in-medics-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92483","title":{"rendered":"Bahrain reaches verdict in medics case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a title=\"Index: Bahrain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/tag\/Bahrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bahraini<\/a> court today <a title=\"Reuters: \" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/06\/14\/us-bahrain-medics-idUSBRE85D0SL20120614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acquitted<\/a> nine of the 20 medics <a title=\"Human rights in Bahrain --- rhetoric and reality\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/10\/human-rights-in-bahrain-rhetoric-and-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0last year for treating anti-government protesters and reduced the sentences of nine others. Last year&#8217;s sentences, handed down on 20 September,\u00a0ranged from five to 15 years and sparked international outrage.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2011 uprising, the medics &#8212; who worked at the state-owned\u00a0Salmaniya Medical complex in the tiny country&#8217;s capital &#8212; were targeted by authorities and an aggressive state media campaign. Charges brought <a title=\"Amnesty: Bahrain: Verdict approaching in case of 20 medics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/news\/bahrain-verdict-approaching-case-20-medics-2012-06-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against<\/a> them included &#8220;illegal possession of firearms for a terrorist purpose&#8221;, &#8220;attempting to occupy a public hospital using force&#8221; and &#8220;attempting to topple the system of government by force&#8221;.\u00a0They had treated those injured by security forces after they cracked down on protests at the Pearl Roundabout.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about the doctors who will be jailed, Brian Dooley of <a title=\"Reuters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/06\/14\/us-bahrain-medics-idUSBRE85D0SL20120614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Rights First <\/a>told Reuters:\u00a0&#8220;The truth from today is that medics are to be jailed for treating the injured and for telling the world about the regime&#8217;s crackdown.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen year sentences were upheld for two other doctors who fled the country.<\/p>\n<p>Of the nine medics sentenced, senior\u00a0orthopaedic\u00a0surgeon Ali Al-Ekri had his sentence reduced from 15 years to five. The other sentences range from three years to one month.<\/p>\n<p>Nada Dhaif, one of the acquitted doctors, told Index that today&#8217;s decision has left her with &#8220;mixed feelings&#8221; and &#8220;in a state of shock&#8221;. She also added that acquittal does not necessarily mean &#8220;the end&#8221; of her case.\u00a0&#8220;They were heroes,&#8221; said Dhaif of her colleagues. She said the medics will &#8220;continue to fight&#8221; the sentences.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor and activist, who now chairs the Bahrain Rehabilitation and Anti-Violence Organisation (BRAVO), said that the remaining sentences send a message that the government is still &#8220;not acknowledging mistakes&#8221; and instead continues to place blame on the medics.<\/p>\n<p>Maryam Alkhawaja, vice president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), told Index that they &#8220;still urge the government of Bahrain to immediately drop all charges levelled against the other medics&#8221;, adding that the organisation &#8220;welcomed&#8221; the reduced sentences and dropped charges.<\/p>\n<p>Alkhawaja, who is also head of the international office for the Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR), said that the &#8220;medics were targeted for carrying out their duties as doctors and witnessing crimes committed by security forces in Bahrain&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bahraini authorities, four of the nine medics to be jailed have the right to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Bahraini court today acquitted nine of the 20 medics sentenced\u00a0last year for treating anti-government protesters and reduced the sentences of nine others.
