{"id":92504,"date":"2012-07-09T17:32:31","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T16:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=6319"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:19:45","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:19:45","slug":"nabeel-rajab-bahrain-jailed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92504","title":{"rendered":"Bahraini activist Nabeel Rajab jailed for tweets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) was taken into custody by Bahraini authorities today after a court sentenced him to three months in prison for allegedly defaming the citizens of the village of Muharraq on Twitter.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On 2 June, Rajab <a title=\"FIDH\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fidh.org\/Bahrain-Arbitrary-arrest-and,11810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Khalifa, leave the residents of Al Mahraq, its Sheikhs and its elderly. Everyone knows that you are not popular here, and if there wasn\u2019t a need for money, they wouldn\u2019t have gone out to receive you. When will you step down?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Masked police officers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/nENlacyy3Sw?\">reportedly took Rajab<\/a> from his home in the village of Bani Jamra after the guilty verdict was issued:<\/p>\n<p>The news of Rajab&#8217;s arrest comes after reports of increased attacks on members of civil society in the gulf kingdom, which has had ongoing unrest since the start of anti-government protests in February last year. Journalist Reem Khalifa, who <a title=\"Human Rights First: Bahrain escalates attacks on civil society\" href=\"http:\/\/www.humanrightsfirst.org\/2012\/07\/03\/bahrain-escalates-attacks-on-civil-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a> for the Associated Press, said that on 29 June stun grenades were fired directly at her. Khalifa has faced constant harassment as well as death threats for reporting the government&#8217;s crackdown on unrest. On 27 June, activist Zainab Alkhawaja <a title=\"BCHR: Hold Police Accountable in Teargas Episode\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bahrainrights.org\/en\/node\/5349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was left<\/a> with a wounded leg after security forces reportedly fired a tear gas canister directly at her while dispersing a demonstration. \u00a0The activist is the daughter of well-known dissident and founder of BCHR Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, who is currently serving a life sentence for participating in anti-government protests last year.<\/p>\n<p>According to his lawyer, Rajab&#8217;s three weeks in prison in June <a title=\"Reuters: Bahrain court jails protest leader over tweets: lawyer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/07\/09\/us-bahrain-protest-tweet-idUSBRE8680I020120709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">will be counted<\/a> in his jail time, and he plans to appeal the charges.
