{"id":92547,"date":"2012-10-16T13:51:46","date_gmt":"2012-10-16T12:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uncut.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7207"},"modified":"2019-09-17T11:19:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T10:19:39","slug":"saudi-arabia-uk-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=92547","title":{"rendered":"Saudis warn UK over human rights probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saudi Arabia has said \u00a0it is &#8220;insulted&#8221; by the announcement of a UK Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee <a title=\"Commons Select Committee - The UK's relations with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/foreign-affairs-committee\/news\/uk-relations-with-saudi-arabia-and-bahrain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inquiry<\/a> into the UK&#8217;s relationship with the Gulf states, in particular Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. In a veiled threat to key trade deals, the country\u00a0<a title=\"BBC News - Saudi Arabia 'insulted' by UK inquiry \" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-19943865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned<\/a> that it\u00a0may\u00a0&#8220;re-evaluate their country&#8217;s historic relations&#8221; with the UK in response. The inquiry has asked for responses on &#8220;how the UK can encourage democratic and liberalising reforms in Saudi Arabia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This probe was first announced unofficially\u00a0by Ann Clwyd MP\u00a0at an Index on Censorship Bahrain briefing in early September. Attending the briefing on human rights abuses and stalled efforts of reform was\u00a0<a title=\"Index on Censorship - Bahrain is Britain's shame\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2012\/09\/bahrain-is-britains-shame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maryam al-Khawaja<\/a>, Acting President of the <a title=\"BCHR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bahrainrights.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bahrain Center for Human Rights<\/a>\u00a0(BCHR). Highlighting\u00a0censorship and human rights abuses in her country,\u00a0<a title=\"Independent - UK is to Bahrain what Russia is to Syria, says prominent Bahraini human rights activists \" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-is-to-bahrain-what-russia-is-to-syria-says-prominent-bahraini-human-rights-activists-8209715.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">al-Khawaja<\/a>\u00a0said \u201cthe UK is to Bahrain what Russia is to Syria\u201d.<br \/>\nIn the <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Bahrain is Britain's shame\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2012\/09\/bahrain-is-britains-shame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">briefing<\/a>\u00a0she pointed out that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The UK government has made countless pledges to push on Bahrain to implement supposed reforms, but has yet to push forcefully on its partner where it counts\u2026the country continues to perpetuate flagrant human rights violations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The UK <a title=\"Foreign and Commonwealth Office\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fco.gov.uk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foreign Office<\/a>\u00a0(FCO) regularly refers to Saudi Arabia and <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Time to stop doing business with Bahrain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2012\/04\/its-time-to-stop-dealing-with-bahrain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bahrain<\/a> as &#8220;close friends&#8221;, &#8220;key allies&#8221; and &#8220;valuable trade partners&#8221;. \u00a0Just yesterday as the inquiry furore was made public the\u00a0FCO said: \u201cSaudi Arabia is a key strategic partner in the region and one of the closest friends and allies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly it is politically expedient to ignore the way\u00a0Saudi Arabia ruthlessly constricts the freedom of its female population, censors much criticism of the ruling authorities and regularly breaks international human rights law in the way it treats its citizens. Bahrain, another ally, breaks up peaceful protests with teargas, birdshot and police brutality, locking up its citizens for such dreadful crimes as <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Bahrain activist Nabeel Rajab sentenced to three years in prison \" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2012\/08\/bahrain-activist-nabeel-rajab-sentenced-to-three-years-in-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeting<\/a>\u00a0and <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Bahrain activist jailed for tearing up picture of king \" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2012\/09\/bahrain-zainab-alkhawaja-bchr-jailed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;insulting the King&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the recent uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East, the UK government openly supported protests and revolutions that toppled dictators in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. However when the Bahraini people gathered at the Pearl Roundabout in Manama to voice their discontent they were met with a <a title=\"index on Censorship - Bahrain February 14\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/bahrainfeb14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brutal crackdown<\/a> by the Bahraini authorities aided by Saudi forces. Despite promises of reform this crackdown continues complete with numerous injured protesters, political prisoners, and claims of torture.<\/p>\n<p>And the punishment by the UK government to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain?
