{"id":93409,"date":"2011-11-14T16:09:44","date_gmt":"2011-11-14T16:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=6683"},"modified":"2019-09-16T13:28:47","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T12:28:47","slug":"day-one-of-leveson-inquiry-reveals-extent-of-phone-hacking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93409","title":{"rendered":"Day one of Leveson Inquiry reveals extent of phone hacking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The names of\u00a028 News International employees\u00a0were\u00a0written\u00a0in\u00a0<wbr>notebooks\u00a0belonging\u00a0to\u00a0<wbr>private\u00a0investigator\u00a0Glenn\u00a0<wbr>Mulcaire,\u00a0the\u00a0<a title=\"Index on Censorship - Leveson Inquiry\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/category\/leveson-inquiry-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leveson\u00a0Inquiry<\/a>\u00a0<wbr>heard\u00a0today\u00a0as\u00a0it\u00a0began\u00a0<wbr>proceedings\u00a0at\u00a0London&#8217;s\u00a0high\u00a0<wbr>court.<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>Robert\u00a0Jay\u00a0QC,\u00a0counsel\u00a0to\u00a0<wbr>the\u00a0inquiry,\u00a0also\u00a0revealed\u00a0<wbr>that\u00a0the words\u00a0&#8216;Daily\u00a0Mirror&#8217;\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0<wbr>written\u00a0in\u00a0the corner of Mulcaire&#8217;s\u00a0notebook, but a <a title=\"Guardian : Phone hacking: 'nearly 30 NI staff named in Glenn Mulcaire notes'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2011\/nov\/14\/phone-hacking-ni-staff-glenn-mulcaire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trinity Mirror spokesman<\/a>\u00a0has said the company has &#8220;no knowledge of ever using Glenn Mulcaire&#8221;.\u00a0Mulcaire\u00a0was\u00a0<a title=\"BBC: Pair jailed over royal phone taps\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/6301243.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jailed\u00a0in\u00a0<wbr>2007<\/wbr><\/a>\u00a0alongisde\u00a0former\u00a0News\u00a0of\u00a0<wbr>the\u00a0World\u00a0royal\u00a0editor\u00a0Clive\u00a0<wbr>Goodman\u00a0for\u00a0intercepting\u00a0<wbr>voicemail\u00a0messages\u00a0of\u00a0members\u00a0<wbr>of\u00a0the\u00a0Royal\u00a0family.\u00a0<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>11,000 \u00a0pages of Mulcaire&#8217;s notes\u00a0reveals he received a\u00a0total of 2,266 requests from\u00a0the News International,\u00a0with\u00a02,143\u00a0<wbr>being\u00a0made\u00a0by\u00a0four\u00a0unnamed\u00a0<wbr>journalists.\u00a0The inquiry was told that a \u00a0reporter\u00a0referred\u00a0to\u00a0as &#8216;A&#8217; &#8212; and\u00a0who\u00a0cannot\u00a0be\u00a0named for fear of prejudicing\u00a0the\u00a0ongoing\u00a0<wbr>criminal\u00a0investigations &#8212; made\u00a01,453\u00a0separate\u00a0requests\u00a0<wbr>for\u00a0information\u00a0from\u00a0Mulcaire.<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>When Mulcaire&#8217;s home was raided in 2006, police also seized\u00a0690 audio recordings\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0record\u00a0of\u00a0586 voicemail messages\u00a0intended\u00a0for\u00a064\u00a0<wbr>individuals.<\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>Jay also confirmed that Mulcaire&#8217;s notes cited\u00a05,795 names who may be potential victims\u00a0of phone hacking.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s revelations suggest a culture of phone hacking at News International, Jay said, adding\u00a0that the scale of Mulcaire&#8217;s work\u00a0suggested\u00a0that\u00a0NI\u00a0must\u00a0<wbr>have\u00a0employed\u00a0the\u00a0private\u00a0<wbr>investigator\u00a0full-time.<\/wbr><\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>He asked if\u00a0there was a\u00a0&#8220;culture of denial, or worse, a cover up&#8221;
