{"id":93451,"date":"2011-12-15T17:03:22","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T17:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7101"},"modified":"2011-12-15T17:03:22","modified_gmt":"2011-12-15T17:03:22","slug":"punks-at-gig-punished-under-strict-islamic-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93451","title":{"rendered":"Punks at gig punished under strict Islamic law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Punk rock is under serious attack in Indonesia&#8217;s most conservative province, after a group of young punks were arrested by baton-wielding police\u00a0and taken for \u201cmoral rehabilitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police raided a concert for a <a title=\"Censorship in America : Sharia Police Arrest \u2018Punks\u2019 in Indonesia\u2019s Aceh\" href=\"http:\/\/censorshipinamerica.com\/2011\/12\/14\/freedom-of-expression-sharia-police-arrest-punks-in-indonesias-aceh\/\" target=\"_blank\">local orphanage<\/a> at Budaya Park\u00a0in the Sharia-ruled province Aceh on Saturday, arresting 64 people in total &#8212; 59 men and five women, who had travelled from across the country to attend the event.<\/p>\n<p>Objecting to nothing other than the outlandish style of the punk rockers, with their Mohawk hairstyles, pierced faces and ripped clothing, police claimed the youths were tarnishing the image of the province, and posed a threat to Islamic values.<\/p>\n<p>After the arrest, police began \u201ccleansing\u201d the youths. They took away their \u201cdisgusting\u201d clothes, replacing them with clothes worn in prayer, removed their piercings and shaved off their spiky Mohawks.\u00a0Even the few female rockers in the group were subject to a compulsory haircut, as female police officers cut their hair in the <a title=\"National Post: Punk rock fans jailed, \u2018morally rehabilitated\u2019 by Indonesian sharia police\" href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/2011\/12\/14\/punk-rock-fans-jailed-morally-rehabilitated-by-indonesian-sharia-police\/\" target=\"_blank\">regulation police haircut<\/a> &#8211; short, blunt bobs.<\/p>\n<p>The youths, who were thrown into <a title=\"LA Times: Indonesian 'punks' get their heads shaved by police \" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-punk-shaving-pictures,0,3795904.photogallery\" target=\"_blank\">pools of water<\/a> and given toothbrushes as part of their &#8220;spiritual cleansing,&#8221; face 10 days of \u00a0<a title=\"Metro: Punks at concert in Indonesia punished under strict Islamic law \" href=\"http:\/\/www.metro.co.uk\/news\/884904-punks-at-concert-in-indonesia-punished-under-strict-islamic-law\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;re-education,&#8221;<\/a> with military-style discipline training and religious classes, including Koran recitation.<\/p>\n<p>Banda Aceh deputy mayor Illiza Sa\u2019aduddin Djamal who ordered the arrests <a title=\"AFP: Indonesian sharia stronghold 'rehabilitates' punks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5ga35ArRcfAVDZwBGO_ykJ1iICBMw?docId=CNG.e2f990e1dee7615dae2edf14361897f2.6d1\" target=\"_blank\">told AFP<\/a>: &#8220;We feared that the Islamic sharia law implemented in this province will be tainted by their activities.&#8221; \u00a0He added: &#8220;We hope that by sending them to rehabilitation they will eventually repent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Road runner records: Indonesian Punk Rock Fans In 'Moral Rehabilitation'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roadrunnerrecords.com\/blabbermouth.net\/news.aspx?mode=Article&amp;newsitemID=167253\" target=\"_blank\">20-year-old punker<\/a>\u00a0Fauzan said &#8220;Why? Why my hair?! We didn&#8217;t hurt anyone. This is how we\u2019ve chosen to express ourselves. Why are they treating us like criminals?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Local police chief Iskandar Hasan reportedly agreed with the mayor:\u00a0&#8220;We need to fix them so that they will behave properly and morally. They need harsh treatment to change their mental behaviour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Complaints from young punks about\u00a0harassment\u00a0from the authorities has increased recently, but this raid on the concert, which had 100 attendees, was the biggest bust yet.<\/p>\n<p>Several human rights activists in the area have claimed that the camps violate the youths&#8217; human rights, but police have denied this,\u00a0claiming the programme is an \u201corientation into normal Indonesian society\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of punk rock music in Islamic Indonesia has rocketed over the past few years, with more and more Indonesians embracing both the music and the fashion.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic punk music scene began in 2003, inspired by novel from American convert, Michael Muhammad Knight.
