{"id":93457,"date":"2011-12-20T18:36:31","date_gmt":"2011-12-20T18:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7165"},"modified":"2011-12-20T18:36:31","modified_gmt":"2011-12-20T18:36:31","slug":"palestinian-artist-censorship-lacoste-elysee-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93457","title":{"rendered":"Palestinian artist claims censorship after removal from gallery prize shortlist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>London-based artist Larissa Sansour has claimed that she has been removed from the shortlist for a prestigious European prize after her work was deemed too \u201cpro-Palestinian\u201d by the sponsors, fashion label Lacoste.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement today, Jerusalem-born Sansour said the fashion label had decided her submitted work,\u00a0Nation Estate which addresses ideas of Palestinian identity and statehood, was pro-Palestinian. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.larissasansour.com\/nation_estate.html\">photo and video work<\/a> was developed specifically for the Lacoste Elys\u00e9e Prize, awarded by Lausanne\u2019s Mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Elys\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Sansour claims she was asked by the prize organisers to approve a statement saying she had quit the prize \u201cin order to pursue other opportunities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An email seen by Index on Censorship, introducing shortlisted artists to each other, appears to confirm that Sansour was on the original list of eight artists and collaborators. The other seven nominees named in the email from the prize organisers remain\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elysee.ch\/en\/lacoste-elysee-prize-2011\/\">on the published shortlist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sansour commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am very sad and shocked by this development. This yearPalestinewas officially admitted to UNESCO, yet we are still being silenced. As a politically involved artist I am no stranger to opposition, but never before have I been censored by the very same people who nominated me in the first place. Lacoste\u2019s prejudice and censorship puts a major dent in the idea of corporate involvement in the arts.
