{"id":93481,"date":"2012-01-16T17:21:41","date_gmt":"2012-01-16T17:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7414"},"modified":"2019-09-16T13:28:12","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T12:28:12","slug":"trinity-mirror-leveson-inquiry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93481","title":{"rendered":"Sly Bailey rejects Mirror phonehacking claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"block-71\">The CEO of Trinity Mirror,\u00a0Sly Bailey, told the <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Leveson Inquiry\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/category\/leveson-inquiry-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leveson Inquiry<\/a> today that she has seen no evidence of phone hacking at Trinity Mirror, only &#8220;unsubstantiated allegations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When pressed by counsel David Barr why the group had not conducted a detailed investigation, Bailey argued that by investigating claims without evidence of hacking\u00a0was not a way to run a healthy organisation.<\/p>\n<p>She called claims made by a BBC Newsnight programme that the practice <a title=\"Guardian - Phone hacking used by Sunday Mirror, claims BBC Newsnight \" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2011\/jul\/23\/phone-hacking-sunday-mirror-newsnight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took place<\/a> at the Sunday Mirror a &#8220;terrible piece of journalism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey said she had heard the evidence of ex-Mirror reporter <a title=\"Index on Censorship - Phone hacking a &quot;bog standard journalist tool&quot;, ex-Mirror reporter tells Inquiry\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/2011\/12\/21\/phone-hacking-leveson-inquiry-daily-mirror\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Hipwell<\/a>, who told the Inquiry that phone hacking was a &#8220;bog-standard journalistic tool&#8221; used by the paper, but added she was &#8220;not sure&#8221; whether she knew of his allegations at the time.<\/p>\n<p>In her testimony Bailey also detailed the &#8220;intense cyclical pressure&#8221; facing her company. &#8220;It&#8217;s like a falling knife that is getting sharper on the way down,&#8221; she said, noting the collapse in recruitment advertising and increasing pressure from digital news platforms.\u00a0&#8220;Our strategy is to build a growing multi-platform business,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking today, Tina Weaver, editor of the Sunday Mirror, said privacy injunctions\u00a0brought by rich, powerful men &#8220;rained down on us like confetti&#8221; a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver said she\u00a0&#8220;wrestled with competing tensions&#8221; over a kiss and tell story published in the paper involving <a title=\"Index on Censorship - UK: Rio Ferdinand loses privacy case over Sunday Mirror kiss and tell\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2011\/09\/uk-rio-ferdinand-loses-privacy-case-over-sunday-mirror-kiss-and-tell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rio Ferdinand<\/a>\u00a0in April 2010. She said editors now spend a &#8220;disproportionate&#8221; amount of time balancing Article 8 (private life) and Article 10 (freedom of expression), to which Leveson asked, &#8220;isn&#8217;t that exactly what you should be doing?&#8221; Weaver agreed it was.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s where the line is being drawn that concerns me,&#8221; Weaver told the Inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver added that she felt the perception of public interest was at times too narrow. &#8220;I think what readers deem to be in the public interest is deemed by judges to be private,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Mirror&#8217;s investigations editor Andrew Penman discussed his reservations about prior notification.
