{"id":93496,"date":"2012-01-25T12:20:14","date_gmt":"2012-01-25T12:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=7569"},"modified":"2019-09-16T13:28:03","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T12:28:03","slug":"mazher-mahmood-roy-greenslade-leveson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93496","title":{"rendered":"Fake Sheikh recalled to Leveson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Investigative reporter Mazher Mahmood was recalled to the Leveson Inquiry today and quizzed over the reasons for his 1989 departure from the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmood, also known as the Fake Sheikh for the disguise he wears while investigating, told the Inquiry in December that he and then managing editor (news) Roy Greenslade had &#8220;had a disagreement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a title=\"Guardian - The real reason that Mazher Mahmood left the Sunday Times under a cloud \" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/greenslade\/2011\/dec\/14\/mazher-mahmood-sundaytimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a> written after Mahmood&#8217;s first appearance at the Inquiry, Greenslade wrote that Mahmood had &#8220;falsely blamed the news agency and then tried to back up his version of events by entering the room containing the main frame computer in order to alter the original copy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having been found out, Greenslade wrote, Mahmood &#8220;rightly understood that he would have been dismissed&#8221; and so wrote a letter of resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmood, who returned to the Sunday Times last autumn after the News of the World closed in July 2011,\u00a0<a title=\"Audioboo - Mazher Mahmood\" href=\"http:\/\/audioboo.fm\/boos\/638273-mahzer-mahmood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regretfully admitted<\/a>\u00a0today that he &#8220;foolishly&#8221; tried to blame the news agency for his mistake.<\/p>\n<p>He added later that\u00a0a\u00a0<a title=\"British Journalism Review - I\u2019ve seen the future and it\u2019s crap  \" href=\"http:\/\/www.bjr.org.uk\/data\/2011\/no4_williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent claim<\/a>\u00a0made by former Sunday Times news editor Michael Williams that Mahmood had offered a financial bribe to\u00a0staff in the newspaper computer room to falsify his copy was &#8220;completely untrue&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmood told the Inquiry that\u00a0Greenslade has since been &#8220;very critical&#8221; of his investigations: &#8220;Ever since he has displayed obsessive hostility towards me. There were run-ins over several stories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tuning into the Inquiry, Greenslade tweeted:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>Mahmood <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/%2523Leveson\">#Leveson<\/a> Continues to say I had disagreements with him at Sunday Times &#8211; Can&#8217;t remember one. Treated him same as other reporters<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Roy Greenslade (@GreensladeR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreensladeR\/status\/162119107137912832\" data-datetime=\"2012-01-25T10:26:21+00:00\">January 25, 2012<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><br \/>\nGrilled by Lord Justice Leveson and counsel David Barr on the reliability of his sources, Mahmood said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve had front-page splashes from crack addicts, prostitutes, all sorts of sources&#8221;, adding that &#8220;one crack addict stole my tape recorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A prosecution arising from Mahmood&#8217;s 2002 News of the World splash claiming there was a plot to kidnap Victoria Beckham was <a title=\"Guardian - Journalist complicit in Beckham plot, court told \" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2006\/jul\/26\/newsoftheworld.pressandpublishing1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dropped<\/a> when\u00a0prosecution lawyers decided that Florim Gashi, the key witness (one of Mahmood&#8217;s sources), was unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>Also appearing this morning was RMT union leader Bob Crow, who claimed his union had been a victim of &#8220;victimisation&#8221;. He described being <a title=\"The Sun - Union boss Bob not Crowing now \" href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sol\/homepage\/news\/2480003\/We-hold-up-Bob-Crow-on-his-way-to-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doorstepped<\/a> by reporters and photographers from the Sun, who said to him: &#8220;What&#8217;s it like not to get to go to work? You stopped people going to work this week so get a taste of your own medicine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He was also asked about a Mail on Sunday story from 2003 showing that he had got a scooter to work owing to tube failures.
