{"id":93736,"date":"2013-04-25T09:54:02","date_gmt":"2013-04-25T09:54:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=12063"},"modified":"2013-04-25T09:54:02","modified_gmt":"2013-04-25T09:54:02","slug":"nick-clegg-kills-snoopers-charter-for-now-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=93736","title":{"rendered":"Nick Clegg kills Snooper&#039;s Charter &#8211; for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg this morning said that the Communications Data Bill &#8212; widely known as the \u201csnooper\u2019s charter\u201d was \u201cnot going to happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on his regular \u201cCall Clegg\u201d slot on London\u2019s LBC radio, Clegg told presenter Nick Ferrari that the government would not pass a law allowing authorities to monitor individuals\u2019 web traffic, describing the idea as neither \u201cworkable\u201d nor \u201cproportionate\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>(Watch at 19 minutes)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/64791308\" height=\"300\" width=\"400\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Clegg went on to suggest that a \u201cmiddle way\u201d could be found, possibly including the assignment of an IP address to each web-enabled device, to allow police to \u201cdo their job\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This would appear to be a victory for the many, including Index on Censorship, who expressed concerns over the sweeping powers proposed in the Communications Data Bill. In an <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.indexoncensorship.org\/2012\/08\/23\/the-communications-data-bill-what-index-says\/\">August 2012 policy note, Index said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Population-wide collection and filtering of communications data is neither necessary nor proportionate. Monitoring and surveillance of this kind impacts directly and in a chilling manner on freedom of expression, inhibiting and restricting individuals in how they receive, share and impart information and encouraging self-censorship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So we will celebrate the apparent end of the Communications Data Bill in its current form.
