{"id":95155,"date":"2017-08-14T13:25:08","date_gmt":"2017-08-14T12:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/?p=95155"},"modified":"2019-01-02T12:16:34","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T12:16:34","slug":"indexawards2017-ildar-dadin-returns-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/?p=95155","title":{"rendered":"#IndexAwards2017: Ildar Dadin returns to activism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;89311&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom of Expression\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2017\/04\/campaigning-fellow-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campaigning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Award-winner Ildar Dadin has returned to activism since his release from prison in February when his conviction was overturned by Russia\u2019s constitutional and supreme courts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dadin was sentenced to three years in prison in December 2015 under a 2014 public assembly law. His<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2017\/04\/campaigning-fellow-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was staging one-man pickets, often holding a billboard, in public. In November 2016, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/en\/feature\/2016\/11\/01\/10-12-people-would-beat-me-all-at-once-kicking-me\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Dadin to his wife was published, exposing torture he experienced in prison. In April 2017, Dadin was prevented from attending the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2016\/11\/awards-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Index Freedom of Expression Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about the international attention his imprisonment received, Dadin expressed that he feels Russian civil society is part of a global society, rather than a totally isolated group. He believes that pressure from civil society both in Russia and abroad were partially responsible for his release. The ultimate goal of his activism shares this global view. He hopes for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;justice for all people, not just Russians, humans&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, Dadin was awarded the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nemtsovfund.org\/en\/boris-nemtsov-prize\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boris Nemtsov Prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which honours individuals who are \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly committed to fighting for the freedom of expression and helping those who are persecuted on political, racial or religious grounds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Dadin previously referenced Nemtsov as an example of a Russian opposition leader killed for his activism and beliefs in his Index Awards acceptance <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/newsite02may\/2017\/04\/ildar-dadin-together-can-refuse-look-away\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0. Without proper travel documents, Dadin was unable to attend the awards ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russian court ordered the Russian Ministry of Finance to pay Dadin a compensation of 2.2 million rubles for unlawful criminal prosecution in May. He originally demanded five million rubles, and in June filed an appeal to increase the compensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Previous prosecution for his activism has not stopped Dadin from continuing to push for freedom of expression in Russia.
