Do you have some spare time to volunteer? Would you like to help support free speech by giving a few hours of your time to Index?
Index has opportunities for volunteers in several areas, including staffing at events, working on our magazine archive, or helping with research.
Freedom of expression charity Index on Censorship is seeking a volunteer videographer to assist in documenting our annual Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Awards gala on the evening of 19 April 2018 in central London. The volunteer student would help us capture the evening, which celebrates courageous individuals — artists, campaigners, journalists — from around the world who are fighting for freedom of expression in difficult circumstances. This year’s nominees are here. The event is attended by global influencers.
The student will:
— Assist our professional videographer by capturing footage as directed. They will provide their video for inclusion in a wide-range of outputs.
— Self produce and edit a series of vox pops of individuals in attendance at the event. (The filming would take place in conjunction with an Index staffer, who would coordinate for the student.)
— Be available for approximately five hours between 5pm and 10pm on 19 April
— Would be helpful if they had access to equipment they were familiar with and a high level of production skills
— Gain professional-level experience in event coverage
— Share the final videos on social media (circa 75K subscribers), our website and YouTube channel
— Cover local transit to and from the event
— Provide refreshments
— Credit in the 2018 Freedom of Expression Awards programme
Deadline for applications is ASAP
Applications to [email protected] with a cover letter, resume and previous clip of the applicant’s work on YouTube, Vimeo or other web-based service.
Index runs exciting events throughout the year – from panel discussions with distinguished authors and thinkers to gala fundraising evenings to our annual Freedom of Expression Awards. Volunteers help us to staff these events, helping with everything from programmes to drinks. Click here to see a selection of our upcoming and recent events.
Index has been publishing the works of censored writers and artists for more than 40 years, and our archive of material includes writing from authors such as Vaclav Havel, Nadine Gordimer, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Salman Rushdie. We are looking for volunteers to help us archive four decades of correspondence and material for new publications.
Index runs a number of campaigns on free expression each year. Recent work has included campaigns on Azerbaijan, Bahrain, art and offence and media freedom in Europe. You can help Index by offering some of your time each week to provide some research on these issues.
