CHLOE CHEUNG
Campaigning Award | Nominee | Freedom of Expression Awards
Chloe Cheung is a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist who became actively involved in the 2019 Hong Kong protests as a teenager, motivated by a deep commitment to democracy and justice. Facing escalating political threats, Chloe chose self-exile to continue her activism abroad.
In the UK, Chloe joined the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, where she campaigns for the release of political prisoners, raises international awareness of human rights violations, and works to hold those responsible for persecution accountable.
In December 2024, the Hong Kong authorities placed a HK$1 million bounty on Chloe, making her one of the regime’s most wanted activists. Despite subsequent physical intimidation and online harassment, she continues to advocate for international pressure on the Hong Kong government. Through public speaking, media engagement, and strategic campaigning, Chloe gives voice to those forced into silence in Hong Kong.
"Authoritarian regimes seek to erase the truth and rewrite history in their favour, but each recognition of the resistance is a blow against their lies. Being shortlisted for this recognition is not only an honour, but above all a reminder of the ongoing crackdown in Hong Kong. Behind this nomination are countless political prisoners locked in cells, punished for standing up for democracy and speaking truth to power. I hope this recognition draws attention to their suffering and strengthens solidarity with those silenced. I, alongside my fellow activists, remain committed to standing on the front lines until Hong Kong is free."
