US students in anti-Islam shirt row

A lawyer for a Florida school district says a handful of students have been sent home from schools this week for wearing shirts that read “Islam is of the Devil.” The shirts are connected to a local church called the Dove World Outreach Center who say that spreading the church’s message is more important than education. Indian “Picasso” banned from show

Maqbool Fida Husain, hailed by many as India’s Picasso, has been told his paintings will not be displayed at the India Art Summit, the countries biggest art extravaganza for the second year in a row. The 94-year-olds paintings have drawn criticism, as well as lawsuits, from hard-line Hindus who are angered that some depict Hindu goddesses in the nude. The Muslim artist went to exile in Dubai three years ago. Read more here

Italy: “burkini” banned in Varallo Sesia

In the northern town of Varallo Sesia in Italy, women wearing the “burkini”, a garment made up of a veil, a tunic and loose leggings, face a fine of €500 if they are spotted at swimming pools or rivers. The mayor of the northern Piedmont town said: “The sight of a ‘masked woman’ could disturb small children, not to mention problems of hygiene.” Read more here

Book on Danish cartoons exludes cartoons

A book called “The cartoons that shook the world” being published by Yale University Press about the Danish cartoons portraying the Prophet Mohammed which provoked outrage from the Muslim world has not printed the controversial cartoons in the book. Read more here
