Manifestos for the Twenty-First Century is a series of books that evolved out of a close collaboration between Seagull Books and Index on Censorship, a home and a voice for freedom of expression since it was founded in 1972.
The first four Manifestos present distinguished writers on the issue of censorship in the modern world—a complex and fragile world where widely differing cultural habits and beliefs exist in close proximity, where offence is easily taken, and where words, images and behaviour are coming under the closest scrutiny. Philosophical, meditative and critical, these books will surprise, clarify and provoke in equal measure.
Manifestos will be an ongoing series with forthcoming books on Offence, the Web, Minorities, Ageing and Democracy.
