In 1972, Index on Censorship published its first magazine. Since then, we have remained the only journal in the world dedicated to free expression and are stocked in over 9,000 universities and institutions around the globe.
Our magazine has included writing from the literary greats and Nobel Prize-winning authors, including Margaret Atwood, Samuel Beckett, Salman Rushdie, Hilary Mantel, Vaclav Havel, Nadine Gordimer and Ariel Dorfman, alongside a global network of on the ground reporters, dissident voices and experts in their field.
Today, we publish our award-winning magazine four times per year. Thanks to our funders Sage and Fritt Ord, we are able to amplify some of the world’s most marginalised and oppressed voices through print.
