Recent projects

Marking the 50th anniversary of the end of UK theatre censorship ushered in by the Theatres Act of 1968, Index on Censorship created an educational and interactive workshop with young people at the British Library.

Index CEO Jodie Ginsberg worked with the English National Opera Baylis Summer Youth Project to create an event that challenged participants to think critically about issues of censorship, both modern and historical.

Feeback about Index's services

Index on Censorship supported me during an extremely difficult time. They understand the impacts of being under media scrutiny, and of feeling financially and personally isolated. Index introduced me to associated professionals who played a significant part in supporting me through a difficult process, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Dr Francesca Carpos, lecturer

“I contacted Index on Censorship to seek some advice about pupils in our Sixth Form wanting to set up a set up a society which would seek to address issues which they felt were not covered in mainstream debating forums. Index was extremely helpful on the question of free speech and gave sound advice and reassurance on whether there was room for such a society. The process is still ongoing and needs delicate handling, but the advice we received was very beneficial and helped clarify the way forward.”

Sixth Form teacher

“As part of the 2018 Integrity 20 schools program, Jodie Ginsberg designed and delivered a workshop entitled “Let’s Talk! What’s the point of free speech and how can we do it better?” A group of 40 students (aged 14 – 17 years) and 7 teachers attended. There was a mix of different schools in the workshop including a private boys’ schools, a co-educational Christian college and a number of state high schools. Teachers reported that the workshop was a particular highlight for their students. One teacher reported that they had integrated the content around free speech into classes both before and after Integrity 20 so that their day out was very much a relevant part of their learning over a 2-3 week period.”
