China sought to prevent the awarding of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Chinese dissident Hu Jia on 23 October.
Prior to the awarding ceremony, the Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe warned the European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering in a letter not to select Hu Jia as it could seriously harm Chinese-European relations.
