Iran admits protesters were tortured

Iran’s police chief, Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, has acknowledged that protesters detained in post-election unrest were tortured in custody, but says the deaths of detainees were caused by illness, not torture. The police commander has fired the head of a detention facility that was ordered closed last month. Three guards at the Kahrizak prison have also been detained on charges of mistreating prisoners. Binyam Mohamed: security services aware of treatment

A revised High Court judgment on the case of Binyam Mohamed suggests that British intelligence services were aware of the location and treatment of the Ethiopian-born former Guantanamo inmate during his detention in Morroco. Mohamed claims to have been tortured while imprisoned there.

Mexican journalist killed and tortured

Mexican news broadcaster, Juan Daniel Martinez Gil, of the Radiorama station in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco, has been found dead with signs of having been tortured. “The body was buried, it had tape covering the face, it was beaten, swollen and without a shirt,” a spokesperson from Radiorama said. Zimbabweans file lawsuit over toruture

In Zimbabwe a freelance photojournalist and 15 members of the Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai, have filed a lawsuit with the High Court demanding compensation in the amount of US $19.2 million ($1.2 million each) following their illegal detainments and alleged torture. Read more here
