Southampton score own goal with photographer ban

10 Aug 2010

Southampton FC has declared that it will retain its ban on all non-official photographers, despite widespread condemnation. The original company sourced to provide photographs for the media, The Digital South, has since refused to work with the League One Club, declaring that they felt the ban was a bad idea. Southampton have nonetheless continued with the ban and will now use its own team of photographers to provide coverage of all home games this season.

Totally agree with SFC. Football is in the entertainment business. Promoters and Artists don’t allow freelance photographers or those employed by the press free access to take, sell or distribute photos at concerts, etc. as they wish so why should the football clubs? Wembley and other venues always had a ban on amateurs taking photos before digital cameras and mobile phones made it impossible to police. Football at all levels has an obligation to maximise revenue so good luck to SFC. Other clubs, especially those in the Premiership will follow suit. Stop whingeing Digital South, you had it all your own way for a long time.
